Is Twitter over?

Let’s catch up: when he took over, Elon Musk fired almost 20% of the workforce.  (Too many as it turned out because he later asked many to come back.)

Then he told the remaining staff that they had to commit to hardcore work, ie 80 hours a week or take a payout.

And guess what? More than 75% of employees said ‘Nah, I’ll take the severance.’

According to people who won’t go on the record for fear of Elon’s wrath, the number of engineers tending to multiple critical systems had been reduced to two, one or even zero, threatening the ability of Twitter to keep working.

Now Musk is walking it back but in the meantime, he has locked down all the Twitter offices and deactivated badges. (Apparently, the CEO is worried about sabotage.)

Trending right now: #RIPTwitter, #GoodByeTwitter and #TwitterDown.

As we posted this, The N.Y. Times reports a memo/plea Elon just circulated which reads:

“Anyone who actually writes software, please report to the 10th floor at 2 p.m. today. Thanks, Elon.”
