To bring attention to the urgent need to protect bees actress Angelina Jolie posed for a portrait swarmed by bees in National Geographic.

She also promoted the  UNESCO-Guerlain program that trains women as beekeeper-entrepreneurs and protectors of native bee habitats around the world.

Amateur beekeeper and professional photographer photographer Dan Winters said he took his inspiration from a famous 1981 Richard Avedon portrait of a bald California beekeeper.

To get the shot the Hollywood royalty couldn’t bathe for three days, so as not to confuse the bees, and had to wipe herself down with phermone.

‘We couldn’t shower for three days before. Because they told me, “If you have all these different scents, shampoos and perfumes and things, the bee doesn’t know what you are.”

‘…Then you put a few things up your nose and in your ears so you don’t give them as many holes to climb in.’
