Let’s get this out of the way first; yes, this is THE Chris Barron, the lead singer of the Spin Doctors. Now forget all the Spin Doctor’s songs and focus on Barron’s new solo album Angels and One Armed Jugglers.(Due out October 20 on Chrysanthemum Record.) It’s a surprisingly lyrical, melodic album that grows on the listener with every spin/ stream.
For the band, he called on Saturday Night Live drummer Shawn Pelton and Jesse Murphy, an ace bassist.
In the vein of other singer-songwriters, his voice first pulls you in and then the lyrics and the band power up and you’re hooked. Sort-of like a combo of Ryan Adams and Rodney Crowell, its a hip alt record with songs as the key.
One day “April and May” is my favorite song; the next day I’ve got ‘Raining Again’ on loop. Do yourself a favor and get ‘Angels and One Armed Jugglers’. You’ll thank us.
