The first of many planes carrying baby formula from Europe arrived in the US on Sunday after Biden invoked the Defense Production Act.

“Folks, I’m excited to tell you that the first flight from Operation Fly Formula is loaded up with more than 70,000 pounds of infant formula and about to land in Indiana,” Biden, 79, said in a tweet.

“Our team is working around the clock to get safe formula to everyone who needs it,” the president added.

Brian Deese, the director of the national economic council, said that the plane carrying 70,000lb of baby formula – enough for half a million bottles – from Ramstein airbase in Germany which landed in Indianapolis ‘should cover about 15% of the product’s nationwide shortage.’

As part of what has been dubbed ‘Operation Fly Formula,’ this first batch of baby formula isn’t enough to abate the tremendous need but it’s a healthy start.
