As the fires raged through the canyons around Malibu, owners desperately tried to round up their pets but some were forced to leave without them. Firefighters swooped up cats, dogs and sometimes horses and now rescue groups are combing through the burnt areas. Happy tales of tearful residents reunited with their animals bring a bright spot to an otherwise grim situation.
And the animals in shelters are being lovingly cared for. There are many ways you can help but according to the Center for International Disaster Information, sending money is almost always the most efficient way to help in a disaster.
