Today the Supreme Court ruled colleges and universities ‘can no longer take race race’ into consideration as a specific basis in admissions.
President Joe Biden criticized the Supreme Court ruling that struck down affirmative action in college admissions and said the decision goes against US values.
“I believe our colleges are stronger when they’re racially diverse. Our nation is stronger, but because we are tapping into the full range of talent in this nation,” he said Thursday.“I also believe that while talent, creativity and hard work are everywhere across this country, not equal opportunity — it is not everywhere across this country. We cannot let the decision be the last word,” he added.
This decision overturns a long-standing precedent that has benefited Black and Latino students in higher education, who don’t have the same advantages as most white and Asian students.
Until there’s a level playing field for all students, we need affirmative action.
