All five officers fired over the death of Tyre Nichols who died after a ‘violent’ traffic stop have now been charged with second-degree murder and taken into custody.

Refresher: Nichols, a 29-year-old FedEx driver, was pulled over on January 7 by the Memphis police for what was initially reported as reckless driving, but the violent confrontation landed him in the hospital where he died three days later. Results of an autopsy point to ‘extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating.’

David Rausch, director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, said of the incident that resulted in Tyre Nichols’s death: ‘In a word, it’s absolutely appalling…What happened here does not at all reflect proper policing. This was wrong. This was criminal.’
