Frustrated by over-tourism, thousands of Barcelonians took to the street to spray tourists with brightly colored squirt guns.

The protesters, who carried signs reading, “Tourists go home,” explained that tourism had inflated the cost of living. Authorities estimated that 2,800 people participated in the protests.

Last year, close to 26 million visited the region, dwarfing the population.

In response, Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni promised to reserve 10,000 residential units usually used by tourists for local residents and increase taxes on tourists, among other measures.
