Why did we forget about gin, easily the mostly drink-able spirit, with a clean, bright taste that’s good in almost anything? Fortunately, there’s a bit of a gin revival going on now, as witnessed by the small-batch boutique gins and the resurgence of gin cocktails on bar menus. Originally, it came from the Netherlands, where troops would have a splash before battle, hence the term ‘Dutch courage.’ That’s where Rutte gin still comes from and along with the classic taste with a predominant flavor from juniper berries, is now available with herbal overtones, such as the Celery Salt though we still have a preference for the Dry Gin. Since Rutte doesn’t use any artificial flavoring or coloring: all comes from fresh fruits, herbs and nuts – even the herbal botanicals have a refreshing, clean taste.
To get you started, here’s a few fun recipes:
‘Krogstad Skull’
Krogstad aquavit, Rutte celery gin, lime, cane, cucumber, cayenne salt, crushed black pepper
‘In Between Days’
Rutte vodka, dry vermouth, grapefruit tarragon cordial, lemon, soda
‘Lavender Spritz’
Rutte dry gin, cocchi americano, lemon, lavender syrup, yellow chartreuse, soda
And when in doubt, you can always fall back on the classic Tom Collins.
