The Voice Judge and singer Gwen Stefani just announced that she had ruptured her eardrum and was forced to last minute cancel a live performance in Las Vegas on Thursday.

Under doctor’s orders, Stefani can’t fly — and right now — can’t sing. For singers, ruptured eardrums — actually a hole or tear in the thin tissue that separates your ear canal from your middle ear (eardrum) — can be critical, since it can result in hearing loss.

Usually, a ruptured eardrum can heal on its own within a few weeks without treatment, though sometimes it may require a procedure or surgical repair to heal.
