On Thursday, Grece legalized same-sex marriage, a day many thought would never come.

This makes Greece the first Orthodox Christian country to establish marriage equality for all.

“This is a milestone for human rights, reflecting today’s Greece — a progressive, and democratic country, passionately committed to European values,” Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.

Key to the legislation is the recognition of same-sex parental rights in case of adoption. Before, only biological parents of children were recognized by the law as legal guardians.

Greece is now the 16th European Union nation and the 35th country worldwide to legalize same-sex marriages.
