According to the reputable New York Times/Siena College poll, President Biden is doing better than he was a year ago but Trump has a lock on the Republican nomination.

Even with Trump’s legal indictments, they are still tied at 43 %  apiece in a hypothetical rematch in 2024, reports the poll.

And Biden’s approval rating of 39 percent is historically poor for an incumbent president seeking re-election, though it has ticked up from 33 percent last July.

In one of the interviews conducted for the poll, a heating and air conditioning contractor from Phoenix put it this way:

“Donald Trump is not a Republican, he’s a criminal,” said John Wittman. A Republican, he said that even though he believed Mr. Biden’s economic stewardship had hurt the country, “I will vote for anyone on the planet that seems halfway capable of doing the job, including Joe Biden, over Donald Trump.”
