As the situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, miles of trucks carrying food and other critical humanitarian supplies are idling on the  Egyptian side of the border.

“We have supplies at the border with Gaza and are ready to move them in, but we need the access to do so,” World Food Program Executive Director Cindy McCain. “I cannot say it enough — we need access, and need it now.”

According to a UN report, there is enough food alone to feed 488,000 people for one week, along with critically needed medical supplies.

“The people of Gaza need food, water, medicine and shelter,” Biden said on Wednesday.

Complicating the efforts is the concern that Hamas will steal the aid while Hamas insists that it won’t let foreign citizens leave Gaza until aid is delivered.

UPDATE:  President Biden said. “I believe in the next 24 to 48 hours, the first 20 trucks will come across the border,” he said Friday afternoon, after intense negotiations.

Back in the US, Biden has pledged that the US would provide $100 million to support humanitarian aid efforts.
