Last night’s off-cycle year election brought some surprises.

Democrats won critical races in Virginia and Pennsylvania — states seen as key for the 2024 vote — as well as in Kentucky.

Virginia’s Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin lost (Trump’s choice); the state Senate stayed  Democratic with the Republican-controlled House of Delegates on track to flip to Democratic control.

 Kentucky’s Democratic governor won reelection.

Pro-choice abortion rights won on the ballot in Ohio.

Democrats are framing the story around abortion rights, which is bringing out voters, especially the key group…young voters.

“Tonight’s results in Ohio should scare every Republican in a state where an abortion question is on the ballot in 2024,” Arizona Republican strategist Barrett Marson told CNN. “Abortion initiatives are both driving turnout among Democrats and forcing Republicans to talk about an issue of which they are on the wrong side of the electorate.”

“Across the country tonight, democracy won and MAGA lost,” Biden tweeted “Voters vote. Polls don’t. Now let’s go win next year.”
