A ship organized by World Central Gaza (WCK) had been kept idling off the coast of Gaza as officials wrangled to get the much-needed aid to the starving people of Gaza. Negotiating a trade blockage at sea and complex logistics once on land, founder celebrity chef José Andrés was finally able to convince the warring factions to let them offload 200 tons of food (the equivalent of about 10 to 12 aid trucks ) for Palestinians today, Friday.

With the Spanish search-and-rescue group Open Arms helping, the boat had traveled from Cyprus to ‘test’ a new maritime corridor to get aid into the Gaza Strip since many humanitarian trucks have not been able to cross the border, due to the Israeli blockade.

Workers had been able to connect the barge bearing the aid to the jetty and the pallets of food were being offloaded, but officials could not address distribution details since realities on the ground are  ‘evolving minute by minute.’

More than a quarter of Gaza’s 2.2 million residents are facing “catastrophic levels of deprivation and starvation,” according to the United Nations.
