It’s a startling and sobering reminder of all the deaths lost to COVID in the U.S

600,000 white flags adorn the National Mall with each one symblozing a life lost to the virus.

Each of the flags —  displayed across the 20 acres of grass —  holds a written personalized message from loved ones.

Titled In America: Remember it was created by Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, who you may remember from the installation of white flags outside RFK stadium last October 2020.

“I wanted to focus on my message. I didn’t purposefully start out to do a large-scale installation. My outrage led me,” Firstenberg said in an interview with NPR.
