Claudia Sheinbaum becomes the first woman to be elected President of Mexico in a history-making election.
A climate scientist and former mayor, Ms. Sheinbaum pledged to continue supporting the ‘leftist’ policies of the current President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. During his Presidency, millions of Mexicans were lifted out of poverty and the minimum wage doubled.
In a speech to her supporters, Ms. Sheinbaum pledged to uphold democracy and work to help corral the gang violence that has plagued the country for years.
“For the first time in 200 years of the republic, I will become the first female president of Mexico,” she said. “And as I have said on other occasions, I do not arrive alone. We all arrived, with our heroines who gave us our homeland, with our ancestors, our mothers, our daughters and our granddaughters.”
