On Tuesday, Israel’s Supreme Court decreed that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox Jewish men
The court ruled there was no legal justification for the ultra-Orthodox exemption from service.
In Israel, military service is compulsory for Jewish Israelis, including women, and as the war In Gaza drags on, the resentment has grown against the ultra-Orthodox.
“These days, in the midst of a difficult war, the burden of that inequality is more acute than ever — and requires the advancement of a sustainable solution to this issue,” the Supreme Court said in its ruling.
The court’s ruling threatens Mr. Netanyahu’s wartime coalition, which has many ultra-Orthodox members who have already signaled their resistance to the new ruling.
For the ultra-Orthodox, military service is seen as dangerous acclimation to a secular Israeli society that they feel would cause the young people to ‘deviate from a lifestyle guided by the Torah, the Jewish scriptures.’
