In just 24 hours, the Province of British Columbia, Canada, received a month’s worth of rain, cutting off roads and rail service and stranding residents since the storm hit Sunday. Farm areas have been especially hard hit, with thousands of farm animals drowned in the flooding.

Prime Minister Trudeau declared a state of emergency and pledged help. The Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed to rescue people and helicopters on Wednesday dropped food supplies to stranded mountain communities after slides destroyed roads and floods submerged major highways.

To date, one woman was killed in a landslide, and two people are missing, but authorities expect the death toll to rise.

Officials in the region have attributed the natural disaster to the effects of climate change.
