Usually, you would see a Lab or a Newfoundland helping out lifeguards at a beach, but in Spain, a poodle named Nilo is helping tow people back to shore.

It makes sense if you know that Poodles, originally a German breed, were historically used for water rescue, he said, though mainly in hunting, and that their fur protects them from the cold.

Nilo’s handler, dog instructor Miguel Sanchez-Merenciano, 45, told Reuters that he enters the water first to reach a swimmer in distress before calling Nilo or other dogs to help them back to safety.

Poodles are one of the smartest dogs and easy to train. And yes, Nilo does wear sunscreen on his noble nose.
