Overtourism has become an issue worldwide, including Mount Fuji, a World Heritage site, so the country recently put new regulations in place for climbers. Now, the country is charging a fee (2,000 yen or $12.40 per person) with a daily maximum of 4,000 climbers, plus guides who manage safety on and around the trails. For instance, there’s no starting a fire or sleeping beside the trail, and those wearing unsuitable clothing will be turned away.

Overcrowding on the mountain is a real issue; in 2019, five million individuals climbed Mount Fuji.

Mount Fuji is a sacred mountain in Japan, and some locals feel visitors don’t show proper respect, so a move is underway to educate climbers before they tackle the climb.
