Authorities announced Friday that the suspect accused of murdering conservative activist Charlie Kirk has been taken into custody following a nationwide manhunt. The arrest, confirmed by the FBI and local law enforcement, comes just days after Kirk’s fatal shooting sent shockwaves through political circles.
Tyler Robinson was taken into custody on Thursday night in southern Utah after having allegedly confessed to his father, Matt Robinson.
In a chilling detail revealed at a press briefing, police said the bullets recovered at the scene had been inscribed with messages. Sources close to the investigation describe short, angry slogans and phrases scrawled onto the ammunition casing, suggesting premeditation and an attempt to send a political message through violence. One engraving reportedly read:
‘Hey Fascists, Catch!’ – next to an up arrow symbol, right arrow symbol and three down arrow symbols – and another read ‘If You Read This You Are Gay LMAO.’
Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was gunned down earlier this week in what prosecutors are calling a targeted attack. His death has prompted an outpouring of grief from supporters and condemnation from across the political spectrum, with leaders warning against escalating political violence.
Federal officials say they are now building a case that could bring domestic terrorism charges in addition to murder. The suspect is expected to make his first court appearance early next week.
“Violence has no place in political discourse,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray in a statement. “We will pursue justice swiftly and fully.”
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities combing through the suspect’s digital footprint to determine whether others may have been involved or influenced the attack.
Echoing the views of many, Late Night Host Seth Meyers called political violence “abhorrent” and “anathema to the highest ideals of this country,” warning that the “rising tide” of it “will only lead to a darker and more dangerous place”.
