U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has indicated that the United States may abandon its efforts to broker a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine within days if no substantial progress is achieved “within a matter of days.” Speaking during diplomatic meetings in Paris, Rubio expressed growing impatience with the stalled negotiations, stating that the viability of the peace process must be determined promptly.

The proposed U.S. plan includes freezing the conflict, allowing Russia to maintain control over occupied territories, easing sanctions, and requiring Ukraine to forgo joining NATO. While the plan has been met with skepticism, both President Trump and Vice President JD Vance have expressed cautious optimism about a potential ceasefire.

In a recent interview, Rubio emphasized the need for a sustainable resolution, stating, “We want to bring stability,” and highlighting the importance of preventing the conflict from reigniting in the near future .

The urgency expressed by Rubio underscores the Trump administration’s desire to conclude the conflict swiftly, aligning with President Trump’s earlier pledge to end the war within 24 hours of taking office. However, the proposed concessions have raised concerns among Ukrainian officials and European allies, who fear that such terms may compromise Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.

As the informal deadline for the peace talks approaches, the international community watches closely to see whether a breakthrough can be achieved or if the U.S. will indeed withdraw from the negotiations.
