The Supreme Court has blocked the Trump administration from implementing new restrictions on mail-in voting ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, delivering a significant setback to President Donald Trump’s effort to overhaul how mail ballots are handled.
The court’s decision leaves in place a lower-court order preventing the U.S. Postal Service from enforcing rules that would have required states to provide voter information and use USPS-approved ballot envelopes with specific barcodes. Critics argued the changes could have disrupted the delivery and counting of legitimate ballots just weeks before the election.
Trump responded angrily, blasting the Supreme Court’s decision and accusing the justices of letting the country down. He sharply criticized the members of the court who did not support his position, while praising Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito who sided with his administration.
“The Supreme Court has really let our Country down! Certain Justices are petrified of these crazed and depraved Democrats, and are totally unable to show the courage necessary to save our America,” Trump scribbled on Truth Social.
In his next Truth Social rant, Mr. Trump slammed the decision as “horrible, highly political.”
“It is a big loss for Republicans, and America itself, and makes cheating by the Radical Left ‘Dumocrats,’ on Mail-In Ballots, a much easier thing to do – And now they have an open field to do so!” he wrote.
The ruling means states can continue using their existing mail-voting systems for the upcoming midterms, avoiding an immediate nationwide change to how millions of ballots are mailed and returned.
