It was one year ago today that 17 students and staff members were killed in a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.

But the Principal at the High School said Thursday’s anniversary won’t be about hate and fear but about remembering the 14 students and three staff members who died. For students who don’t want — or can’t — come to school, they will not be marked absent

Many of the students today showed up for school in burgundy #MSDStrong the motto of the High School since the horrific shooting.

What was so different about this mass shooting was the aftermath. Students organized, made speeches, took their march to Washington and continue to fight for gun control legislation.

President Obama even reached out to praise the activists:

Sadly, without meaningful gun legislation, not much has changed. In the 12 months since there have been nearly 350 mass shootings in the US — nearly one a day.
