When Daverius Peters arrived at his high school graduation he was told he was wearing the ‘wrong shoes’ and couldn’t walk the stage to receive his diploma.

“She said my shoes violated the dress code and I couldn’t attend the ceremony unless I changed them,” said Peters, a senior at Hahnville High School in Boutte, La. The young man was wearing black sneakers because he didn’t own black dress shoes.

In a panic, with the graduation ceremony starting, young Peters saw his favorite professor John Butler.

Here’s the Professor’s account of what happened next:

Last minute before they close the doors to graduation. The young brother comes walking towards me in a panic. He’s like, Mr. John they won’t let me graduate because I don’t have the proper shoes for the dress code🤷🏾‍♂️ he says the lady down there said I can’t walk to get my diploma because of the shoes I’m wearing. In total disbelief I go down to confirm. And sure enough she tells me the same thing. So then it becomes a no brainer to me, a no more questions asked scenario. I gave him the shoes on my feet. Here’s the funny part tho… my shoes were 2 sizes bigger than his, so when his name was called, he had to slide his feet like Sleestak across the stage to receive his diploma😂😂😂 we had a good laugh.

After the ceremony, Peters found his teacher to hand back his shoes and explained that  “I wasn’t surprised because Mr. Butler is that type of person. At school, if you’re having a bad day, he’ll be the one to take you out of class, walk around the school with you and talk to you.”

Although Peters ended up receiving his diploma to the delight of his watching family, Butler said the school needs to adjust the dress code. Immediately.

“Something that small shouldn’t rob a kid from experiencing this major moment,” said Butler, who is planning to meet with school administrators to review the guidelines for future graduation ceremonies. “It’s something that needs to be thoroughly discussed.”
