If you saw the Barbie movie (who didn’t?), you probably know Rugh Handler, who invented the Mattel iconic doll.

But who pushed for and ultimately created the black Barbie?

In Netflix’s new fascinating documentary, you hear about Beulah Mae Mitchell, Kitty Black Perkins, and Stacey McBride Irby at Mattel, who were responsible for the first black dolls, which inspired generations of little black children.

Written and directed by Mitchell’s niece, the film includes interviews with the three trailblazers, as well as other notable women, like Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) and “Black Barbie” executive producer Shonda Rhimes, who naturally, has a Barbie in her image.

‘Black Barbie’ premieres June 19.
