Barbara Bush, the Former First Lady, died Tuesday at 92. The matriarch of the Bush political dynasty, she worked tirelessly on the cause of literacy throughout her time in the White House and long after. The nonprofit Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy raised more than 1 Billion dollars.

Only the second woman in American history to have had a husband and a son elected President (Abigail Adams was the first), Bush was known to be the center of the Texas family and was respected for her straight talk and wicked sense of humor.
For instance, when making an address to a Wellesley College audience, she quipped:
“Somewhere out in this audience may even be someone who will one day follow my footsteps and preside over the White House as the president’s spouse.
“I wish him well,” she said.
She will be missed.
