As first reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer, yellow whistles are sprouting up like daffodils in major cities.
This isn’t some new TikToc trend, but a real safety device …and a symbol of solidarity against Asian hate. Wearers can use the whistles to sound an alarm and summon help.
Why yellow? Historically, the color yellow has been used as a disparaging slur against Asians.
“Whistle-blowing is getting attention, attention from the public to the needs of the Asian community and the immigrant community,” Wei Chen, AAU civic-engagement coordinator said, praising the ‘functionality and symbolism.’
