Emmanuel Macron won five more years as France’s president after a hard-fought victory over his rival, far-right Marine Le Pen.

This marks the first time in 20 years that a sitting president was re-elected.

The centrist leader told his supporters at the foot of the Eiffel Tower that now the election was over he would be a “president for all”.

“An answer must be found to the anger and disagreements that led many of our compatriots to vote for the extreme right,” Mr Macron said in his victory speech. “It will be my responsibility and that of those around me.”

With his win, the EU breathed a sigh of relief. His opponent, Le Pen had run on an anti-immigrant, pro-tax cuts, and a reduced role with the EU, not to mention her cozy relationship with Putin.

And who can forget that her father, the far-right’s previous leader, had dismissed the holocaust as a ‘detail’ of history?
