Usually, the idea of representing a former president in a high-stakes Federal trial (among others) would have lawyers salivating, but many have turned down Trump’s call.

So far, his current legal team includes a Florida insurance lawyer who’s never had a federal case, a past general counsel for a parking garage company and a former host at far-right ‘One America News.’

“Everyone is saying no,” said a prominent Republican lawyer, who like some others spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss confidential conversations.

“You get these guys who just live to be around him, and mistakes get made,” a lawyer who isn’t part of the team said. “These guys just want to make him happy.”

Complicating matters is his reputation for stiffing lawyers (or anyone, really) and ignoring advice.

The New York Times’ Maggie Haberman noted that this is Trump’s seventh or eighth legal team since he became president.

“Finding a new one has been a challenge amid his desire to treat this as a short-term PR issue as opposed to a longer term legal one”

Michael Cohen, Trump’s former attorney would know.

“In olden days, he would tell firms representing him was a benefit because they could advertise off it. Today it’s not the same. “He’s also a very difficult client in that he’s always pushing the envelope, he rarely listens to sound legal advice, and he wants you to do things that are not appropriate, ethically or legally.”
