As Trump continues to baselessly claim that the Harris administration isn’t helping the people impacted by Hurricane Helene, journalists have revealed how the former President would ‘go out of his way not to help people in Republican areas.’
We saw that during the 2018 California wildfires, where Trump held up aid until his staff was able to convince him that Republicans lived in some of the areas hard hit.
Mark Harvey, Trump’s senior director for the Resilience Policy on the National Security Council staff, said that Trump ultimately approved that aid, but only after he had been shown voting data from residents.
“We went as far as looking up how many votes he got in those impacted areas … to show him these are people who voted for you,” said Harvey, whose recollection was confirmed by Olivia Troy, then-Homeland Security Adviser.
And let’s not forget that Trump blocked $20 billion in relief after Hurricane Maria tore through Puerto Rico because he claimed the country was ‘corrupt’ and he doubted ‘Puerto Rico’s capacity to manage the funds.’
In a probe, White House officials obstructed the investigation. Who can forget when he threw paper towels into the crowd when he finally toured Puerto Rico?
On top of that, Trump denied that thousands died as a result of that hurricane.
San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz tweeted about Trump’s comments : “If he thinks the death of 3,000 people is a success, God help us all.”
