Republicans are facing growing criticism over their response to domestic abuse allegations against Ohio Rep. Max Miller, with opponents arguing that the party has shown little urgency in distancing itself from the embattled congressman.
Miller, who denies all allegations, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee following accusations from his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, and former White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, both of whom have alleged abusive behavior. Miller has called the claims false and politically motivated.
Despite the seriousness of the allegations, many Republican leaders have stopped short of calling for Miller to resign. Former President Donald Trump said he “felt badly” for Miller and hoped he could “work it out,” while House Speaker Mike Johnson has largely deferred to the legal process.
Critics say the response reflects a troubling double standard, arguing that the GOP has been willing to overlook allegations of domestic violence when they involve members of its own party. They contend that the muted reaction sends the wrong message to victims of abuse and raises questions about whether political loyalty is taking precedence over accountability.
Some Republicans, however, have broken ranks. Sen. Bernie Moreno—the father of Miller’s ex-wife—has publicly urged Miller to step aside, calling him a danger and saying he should seek help.
The controversy comes as Republicans prepare for the 2026 midterm elections, with strategists warning that the allegations and the party’s handling of them could become a political liability in competitive districts.
