It was heart-rending.

An Orca named Tahlequah captured the attention of the internet when she woefully carried her dead newborn 1,000 miles away before finally letting go; she has just given birth to a second calf.

That year, Washington Gov. Insell signed an executive order that year, establishing the Southern Resident Killer Whale Task Force. The goal was to study ways to preserve and restore the local orca population, which is an endangered population.

Tahlequah and her new calf are with the  J-pod of orcas, inhabiting waters along the coast between Washington state and Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
