In the immediate aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, GOP leaders revolted. In fact, the two top Republicans in Congress — Representative Kevin McCarthy and Senator Mitch McConnell — told associates they believed President Trump was ‘responsible for inciting the deadly riot’ and vowed to drive him from politics.
‘I’ve Had It With This Guy’ said G.O.P.’s McCarthy while pledging to tell Trump to resign from office. Meanwhile, Senator Mitch McConnell told allies ‘impeachment was warranted.’
These damning statements are from a new book “This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden and the Battle for America’s Future,” by New York Times reporters.
Then what happened?
It’s simple. They realized they could antagonize Trump’s popular base and hurt the party so they quickly backed off and now are denying that they ever made these incendiary comments.
