The Glass Hair trend is back — and this time it’s taking over TikTok, with beauty creators across the app hyping up one product after another as the holy grail in the quest for gleaming locks. The latest batch of shine-enhancing sprays promise to deliver the glow from the inside out by boosting moisture in the hair cuticle.

With active ingredients normally found in skin-care — like hyaluronic acid and glycerin — we couldn’t help but hope we’d finally be able to achieve that straight from the salon look at home. Keeping budget in mind, we opted to test out a smoothing spray by I Am Proud, a brand that claims to offer “high-performance skincare and haircare products at an accessible price point.” And at $8.95 USD, their Hair Proud Glass Hair Heat-Activated Smoothing Shine Spray  won’t break the bank. But, will it actually deliver on the promise to “instantly smooth, strengthen, and add intense shine,” all while leaving the hair “frizz free and manageable with a waterproof finish.”

BEFORE

Unfortunately, not quite. After following the instructions and applying the product liberally in sections to damp hair, we blow-dried with a round brush to activate the “encapsulated shine complex,” but the results were, well, lackluster.

AFTER

Our flyaways were still an issue and there wasn’t much noticeable shine added. On the positive side, our hair felt extra soft and silky and we love that it’s vegan and cruelty-free. But as far as achieving the glass hair look, it just didn’t deliver.

Unfortunately, as the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
