A federal judge sharply criticized the Trump administration during proceedings in an IRS-related lawsuit, suggesting the government’s legal arguments appeared to have been made in bad faith and questioning the basis for bringing the case in the first place.
The judge nullified the agreement the government reached with Trump and his sons over the leak of his tax returns, and also lambasted government and the president’s lawyers for using the judicial process to try to ‘concoct a beneficial arrangement for the president.’
During the hearing, the judge expressed frustration over the administration’s handling of the matter, indicating that the court had been presented with shifting explanations and arguments that failed to withstand scrutiny. The judge warned that the judicial system relies on parties acting honestly and transparently, and said the conduct described in the case raised serious concerns.
The lawsuit centers on actions involving the Internal Revenue Service, with the judge signaling that the administration’s legal strategy may have lacked a legitimate foundation. While no final ruling has been issued on the merits of the case, the judge’s pointed remarks mark one of the strongest courtroom rebukes directed at the Trump administration in recent weeks.
“This lawsuit was not brought to vindicate rights; it was brought to manipulate the judicial process to pursue benefits unavailable in litigation because the parties were not adverse,” she said.
Legal analysts say allegations that a case was pursued in bad faith are significant, as they can expose parties to sanctions or other court-imposed penalties if the judge ultimately determines the litigation was improperly filed.
