In a recent incident at  a Texas detention center for Honduran refugees, a breast-feeding baby was taken from her mother’s arms and the mother was handcuffed for resisting, the woman’s attorney says.

Attorney Natalia Cornelio, told CNN the woman from Honduras sobbed Tuesday as she recounted how her daughter was taken from her.

“The government is essentially torturing people by doing this,” said Cornelio, who is with the Texas Civil Rights Project.

Now the US Conference of Catholic Bishops has criticized President Donald Trump’s administration over immigration policy on Wednesday, declaring that separating mothers and children at the US border is “immoral.”

The children are taken to detention centers.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, the president of the organization, said in a statement, “Families are the foundational element of our society and they must be able to stay together. While protecting our borders is important, we can and must do better as a government, and as a society, to find other ways to ensure that safety. Separating babies from their mothers is not the answer and is immoral.”
