The ‘Endless Cruise’ Comes to an Abrupt End: Passengers Stranded in Cambodia After Company Goes Bust.

What was supposed to be the ultimate retirement dream has turned into a travel nightmare for more than 200 passengers aboard a luxury residential cruise ship, after its operator abruptly suspended operations and left passengers stranded in Cambodia.

The Florida-based company Villa Vie Residences, which operated the MV Odyssey, announced that it could no longer afford to keep its around-the-world voyage going. Passengers were reportedly given just seven hours to pack their belongings and disembark when the ship docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, on October 27.

The Odyssey launched from Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024, promising travelers the opportunity to make the cruise ship their permanent home while visiting destinations around the globe. Some passengers paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for cabins, while others sold their homes and possessions to embrace a life at sea. The company had even marketed residency programs offering stays of up to 15 years.

So what went wrong? According to the company, soaring fuel prices following the war with Iran sent operating expenses through the roof. Monthly fuel costs per cabin reportedly jumped from approximately $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000 in parts of Asia. The company’s CEO acknowledged that expenses had climbed from roughly $400,000 to $2 million a month.

The financial crisis became so severe that CEO Mikael Petterson told CBS News the company intends to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection while seeking financial restructuring.

For passengers, however, the financial explanation offers little comfort. Some retirees are now scrambling to find hotels and flights home, while others say they have limited funds and nowhere to go. Cambodian officials reported that 203 passengers and 156 crew members were aboard when the ship arrived.

Villa Vie says it is working to arrange temporary accommodations and explore ways to restructure the business, but there is no guarantee the voyage will ever resume.

For those who dreamed of waking up in a different country every few days without ever having to unpack their suitcases, this was supposed to be the adventure of a lifetime. Instead, their floating retirement community has become an expensive lesson in just how quickly a dream vacation can turn into a travel disaster.
