Known for his commanding roles in movies such as ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Alien’ actor Tom Skerritt died Wednesday at 93 of natural causes.

He played Evan Drake on “Cheers” for several episodes in the ’80s, and earned critical acclaim for playing Sheriff Jimmy Brock for the entire four-season run of “Picket Fences” on CBS between 1992 and 1996. The role won him the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993.

“A writer once described me as a character actor locked in a leading man’s body, and I’ve always loved that. It’s a nice compliment. I’ve been able to walk the line between television and features,” he once said in an interview.
