For the last few days, Trump has claimed that he’s been negotiating with Iran over ending the war and that Tehran had given the U.S. a “prize” related to freeing up oil supplies and the Strait of Hormuz.

“They’re gonna make a deal,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “They did something yesterday that was amazing, actually. They gave us a present and the present arrived today. It was a very big present, worth a tremendous amount of money. I’m not going to tell you what that present is, but it was a very significant prize, and they gave it to us.”

“That meant one thing to me,” he added. “We’re dealing with the right people.”

To other media outlets,  Trump claimed the Iranians had agreed “they will never have a nuclear weapon.”

Sounds good, but Iran says not so fast. Iranian leadership has said they have NOT been negotiating with Trump; that they DON’T want an end to the nearly one-month-old conflict as Trump stated; and that Trump’s claim that they were negotiating a ceasefire is fake news.

Under the shadow of the war, Trump’s poll numbers have fallen even further, hitting new lows this week.
