At least 55 are dead after a magnitude 7.6 temblor hit Japan’s West Coast.  Japanese media reports said tens of thousands of homes were destroyed as earthquake relief struggled to reach those who were the hardest hit.

Officials have warned people in some areas to stay away from their homes because of the risk of more aftershocks.

In some areas, water, power, and telecommunication services are still down,

President Biden said in a statement that his administration was “ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Japanese people.”
