US President-elect Donald Trump has said it would be a “great idea” for Canada to become the 51st US state.
“Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State,” he said on Tuesday on his social media platform, repeating a jab at his northern neighbour that he has mentioned a few times recently.
“Many Canadians want Canada to become the 51st State. They would save massively on taxes and military protection. I think it is a great idea. 51st State!!!” Trump added.
Canadian Green Party leader Elizabeth May responded that President-elect Trump’s “joke” about Canada being the 51st state of America is “not funny.”
A recent poll suggests only 13 percent of Canadians would like the country to become the next U.S. state
Among the overall population, 82 per cent opposed the idea, the highest of which comes from Atlantic provinces, women and Canadians over the age of 55.
