The newly minted Canadian PM, Mr. Carney, won by a landslide on an anti-Trump platform, so a meeting at the White House was inevitable.
Everything was cordial until Trump started pushing for Canada to be the 51st state. Carney replied steely, saying, “some places are not for sale.”
Mr. Trump did not concede: “Never say never.”
The meeting also turned testy when Trump pushed on his tariff policy, insisting there was nothing Carney could say that would make him lift the tariffs.
Trump breezily said the US doesn’t want cars and steel from Canada “because we’re making our own”.
Carney stayed firm on his “Canada will never be for sale” as Trump hinted making Canada part of the US would be a beautiful marriage.’Carney then mouthed “never” to reporters.
Trying to get the last word Trump hinted “Time will tell.”
