One lucky photographer grabbed this amazing shot of Brazilian surfer Gabriel Medina celebrating after he rode a wave to a 9.90 score. Note Medina signaling to the judges that he’s ‘number one.’
Following in a boat, photographers snapped away, and just as Medina ‘kicked off’ Jerome Brouillet from Agence France-Presse snapped the shot.
The conditions were perfect, the waves were taller than we expected,” said Brouillet. “So he [Medina] is at the back of the wave and I can’t see him and then he pops up and I took four pictures and one of them was this one.
“It was not hard to take the picture. It was more about anticipating the moment and where Gabriel will kick off the wave.”
So the photographer sent the snap to his agency and thought nothing of it—until his phone started to explode with notifications.
Give Brouillet a gold medal.
