A New York man named David Streever has filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), alleging the agency retaliated against him by sending officers to his home after he emailed its acting leadership to criticize its immigration enforcement policies.
According to the lawsuit, the man says the visit by ICE agents was intended to intimidate him and violated his constitutional right to free speech. He claims he was not the subject of any immigration investigation and that the officers’ appearance at his residence came shortly after he sent the email.
In Steever’s email, he never threatens the acting head of ICE.
The case is expected to raise significant questions about free speech, government retaliation, and the limits of federal law enforcement authority.
