LA’s mayor Eric Garcetti donned a black mask for his daily press conference yesterday, saying bluntly, ‘This is the new look.  I know this looks surreal. We’re going to have to get used to seeing each other like this.’

With LA’s coronavirus numbers growing, more and more experts are recommending people wear masks whenever they have to go out, ie. to the grocery store.

While the California Governor Gavin Newsom does not — yet — advise the population to wear masks, that is based on his worry that masks are needed first for first responders.

However, the Mayor pointed out that even homemade cloth masks could help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus though people still need to keep up social distancing.

For inspiration, there are plenty of DIY sites online offering patterns and advice on how to make your own homemade non-surgical mask.

The number of COVID-19 cases in California won’t peak until late May, says the Governor, so it’s time for everyone to get creative.

What’s important in a homemade mask?

  1. The coverage area: the mask should reach above the bridge of the nose and BELOW the chin.
  2. It needs to be snug, to keep the microbes out.
  3. Add layers — the more the better.
  4. It must be kept clean so wash it every time you come back inside.

This mask is made from re-useable grocery bags.
