For the first time, Chicago has elected a gay black woman for Mayor, replacing Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who announced he was not running for a third term.

A formidable former assistant US Attorney, Lightfoot ran Chicago’s police accountability task force and instituted much-needed change.

Ms. Lightfoot is inheriting a city rife with crime and a huge police-community relations problem but if anyone can solve Chicago’s issues, it’s this woman.
