Call the combo of Wicked and Gladiator II ‘Glicked’ or ‘Wikiator,’ but whatever you call it, it’s a huge success.
The two movies opened to colossal box offices, giving studios their best pre-Thanksgiving weekend in over 10 years.
According to the studio, Wicked came in at an estimated $114 million to top the domestic chart. That makes it one of the most successful films based on a Broadway show.
Speculation went wild, fueled by social media, that Gladiator II and Wicked would replicate the Barbenheimer effect this past weekend, but while it didn’t come close to the domestic openings of Barbie ($162 million) and Oppenheimer ($82.5 million), the movies did prove popular with all demos.
Hollywood is happy.
