A Republican Congressman is calling for the impeachment of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, creating a new rift within the GOP over the Trump administration’s military policies.
Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky introduced eight articles of impeachment against Hegseth, accusing the Pentagon chief of exceeding his constitutional authority, including conducting military operations against Iran without congressional authorization. Massie also accused Hegseth of violating protections for civilians, retaliating against a member of Congress and taking other actions he says violate the Constitution.
Massie, a longtime critic of U.S. military intervention, said Hegseth’s actions warrant impeachment, removal from office and disqualification from holding federal office.
The Pentagon strongly defended Hegseth, saying the department remains unified behind his leadership and accusing Massie of targeting a secretary who is focused on America’s military personnel and national interests.
Massie’s resolution was filed as a privileged measure, meaning it could force the House to consider it. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson subsequently sent lawmakers home early for the pre-election recess, blocking the immediate vote. The issue is expected to remain on the congressional agenda when lawmakers return.
